Why now? Why, after a well documented career of chauvinism, misogyny, lewdness, infidelity and sexual harassment lawsuits has the unearthing of Trump talking glibly to a feckless TV personality about sexually assault women finally started the chain reactions of Republican repudiation that should have been set off months ago? While the reasons are likely as many and varied as the excuses that these conservative family men and women will offer up for lending their support to the bloated human embodiment of avarice and garish excess, the primary one is, in my opinion, one rooted both in America’s puritanical past and its deep and abiding discomfort with the female form. The reason the GOP is finally abandoning Trump’s ill-conceived, gold-plated ship is that Donald Trump said the word “pussy.”
No, really…I really think it’s that simple. In the past, Donald Trump has said that you have to treat women like shit, waxed rhapsodic on a Celebrity Apprentice contestant dropping to her knees, said that women should be punished for abortions, wondered aloud why anyone would vote for Carly Fiorina because she was ugly, insulted the appearance and abilities of a list of female journalists too long to list here, made sexual comments about his daughter on a frequent basis and had his ex-wife Ivana say under oath that he raped her, and none of these comments or actions regarding women compelled the bulk of the conservative political establishment to so much as publicly consider renouncing their support.

“Don’t tell me you’re offended when I say ‘pussy’, but you’re not offended when Donald Trumps says it.” – Republican strategist Ana Navarro
Add to that the fact that they didn’t seem phased when Trump called Mexican immigrants rapists, wanted to ban 1.2 billion people from America based on their belief system, encourage violence at his rallies, declare a cavalier attitude with nuclear weapons or any other part of the vast menagerie of Trump’s hideousness and the argument that Republicans are leaving this tangerine nightmare because of principle or morality is rendered more or less bunk. People like Jason Chaffetz and John McCain and Kelly Ayotte aren’t getting off the Trump train because what their party’s nominee did was so much more appalling than anything he had done before. They’re getting off because by saying the words, “grab them by the pussy”, he had made them feel dirty and uncomfortable in a way that nothing Trump had ever said had made them feel before.
All you have to do is watch a panel discussion that aired late into the night on CNN after news of the Trump tape leaked to see how squeamish and horrified Trump’s surrogates are by the very mention of the word pussy. During the discussion, Republican strategist and longtime Trump denouncer Ana Navarro repeatedly quoted Trump to the revulsion and discomfort of the Trump surrogates on the panel, in particular Scottie Neil Hughes, who asked her to stop saying “that word” because his daughter was listening. Navarro responded to Hughes with an indignance that has become quite common for her this election cycle, saying, “Don’t tell me you’re offended when I say ‘pussy,’ but you’re not offended when Donald Trump says it. I’m not running for president, he is.”
This is just opinion, but I am convinced that if Trump had bragged to Billy Bush about using the power derived from his celebrity and his wealth to grab women by the ass and not the pussy, his campaign would be going along at essentially the same clip it has been for the entire election and that this chorus of outraged Republicans would have stayed more or less silent. The reason why these comments will likely succeed in leading to Trump’s undoing as none of the hundreds of nauseating remarks he’s made in the past were able to do has less to do with their offensiveness than with their unique ability to make a growing number of Republican lawmakers aware of how thoroughly the sleaze and wonton immorality of their candidate has rubbed off on them. It’s as if when they heard Trump say, “grab them by the pussy”, many in the GOP snapped out of their deluded reverie and realized that not only did their emperor have no clothes, but that he had convinced them to take theirs off as well.

And to think it may have all come down to the “P” word.
He is truly a disgusting pig. And please tell him to put some clothes on, because he’s no Emperor and we would all be most grateful if he exited Stage Left and made room for those who can lead with dignity and grace.
